Kogi State Specialist Hospital Enjoys Industrial Harmony ~ Prof. Adagiri

...Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment Pays Familiarization and Monitoring Visit to KSSH

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, Prof. Isah Yahaya Adagiri, has reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to fostering industrial harmony and collaboration among staff unions and management. He made this assertion during a familiarization and industrial relations monitoring visit by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, led by the State Controller of Labour, Mr. Labija John.

Prof. Adagiri highlighted the strong and productive relationships between the hospital's management and its various labour unions, which represent the interests of staff. He described the essence of labour unions as being centered on the welfare of their members, emphasizing that disputes can often be resolved amicably without unnecessary conflict. He remarked, “Just as the mouth and tongue may occasionally clash but still function together harmoniously, so too should colleagues in a shared workspace prioritize collaboration over discord.”

Reflecting on past challenges, Prof. Adagiri noted that before his appointment, the hospital experienced succession issues within some unions in the hospital such as the Medical and Health Workers Union and rivalries among healthcare professionals. However, his administration has actively worked to address these concerns, promoting unity and inclusiveness. As part of this effort, he acknowledged the emergence of the National Association of Allied Health Professionals, which has been embraced under the hospital’s open-door policy.

Prof. Adagiri assured the visiting team of the hospital’s readiness to engage with labour organizations constructively and pledged to consult the ministry whenever necessary for guidance. He described the visit as historic, noting that it was the first of its kind and a significant step towards strengthening relationships between the hospital and the ministry.

In his remarks, the State Controller of Labour, Mr. Labija John, commended the hospital for its achievements in maintaining industrial harmony. He explained that the visit was part of the ministry’s routine efforts to engage with key institutions in the state and promote awareness of employer-employee relations. Mr. Labija underscored the Federal Ministry of Labour’s unique mandate, stating that it operates without equivalent structures at the state or local government levels. He encouraged the hospital to involve the ministry in any industrial issues to ensure proper mediation and guidance.

Elder Leke Oloruntoba, the hospital’s Director of Finance and Accounts, praised Prof. Adagiri’s leadership, noting that his inclusive and proactive approach has significantly contributed to maintaining peace and cooperation among staff and management.

Other members of the hospital's leadership present during the visit included the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Adewumi Olukotun, and the Director of Administration, Hajiya Hussein Hassan.
