A Call for Dignity: Addressing the Dehumanizing End of a Mentally Ill Man in Benue State

Image
Written by Umar Emmanuel Omeiza  The recent death of a mentally ill man has sparked concerns within the community, highlighting the need for compassion and proper handling in such circumstances. Despite efforts from neighbors and community members to ensure a dignified farewell, the response from BENSESA, the responsible agency, has been disheartening. Upon learning of the man's passing, community members swiftly took action, alerting the local authorities and securing a court order for BENSESA to remove the body. However, the process has been stalled as BENSESA officials allegedly requested payment for fuel before proceeding. The sight of the deceased man, who had been a familiar presence in the neighborhood for years, lying neglected has deeply affected the children in the area and poses a potential health risk to the community. This neglect not only disregards the dignity of the deceased but also fails to address the emotional and health concerns of the community. Urgent interve...

Anticipated Drop in Petrol Prices Forecasted by CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso

Image
During the launch of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) 2024 Macroeconomic Outlook Report in Lagos on January 24, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso announced that the pump prices of petrol are expected to decrease this year. He highlighted the upcoming operations of both government and private-owned refineries as key contributors to this decline. Cardoso emphasized the potential impact on various sectors, anticipating that the stabilization or reduction in fuel costs would significantly enhance overall economic efficiency and resilience. Notably, Dangote Refinery has already commenced production, and the Port Harcourt Refinery is poised to follow suit in the near future. To support this initiative, Cardoso disclosed collaborative efforts between the apex bank, the Ministry of Finance, and the NNPCL. Their joint efforts aim to ensure that all foreign exchange (FX) inflows are redirected to the Central Bank, contributing to reserves accretion and further strengthening the economy.

An image that portrays an end, linked to another beginning of an odyssey of power and service  The tale of Bello and Ododo is that of a flower; flowers never die, they wither but rises anew and even more glowingly when remoistened because of the sameness and firmness of their roots The flower analogy depicts the beauty of continuum, one birthed from sameness of root and ideological perspective  Sometimes, you do not even need to travel too wide to find inferences, Ododo is himself the flower  With his milestones, Bello is already in the fore-pages of our legendarium This exchange of pen is an exchange of baton of responsibility, a charge to continue in solidification of an enduring legacy  Untold milestones would no doubt accompany Ododo's inthronization because that's Bello's stock in trade.  Dear Kogites, revel endlessly in anticipation of the dawn of another beautiful era, one marked by hope and immeasurable greatness.  - John Amos Onimisi  Writer a...

MY MEETING WITH THE DEVIL

Image
Growing up as a child, my Parents, Pastors, and Sunday School teachers had presented the picture of the devil to me as an ugly creature which may sometimes appear with horns.  In the early years of my life, I had wanted to meet with this devil who is so ugly, so I could exercise the authority I have in Jesus Christ on him. I invited the devil to visit me and he promised to come. I could remember how I had prayed, fasted all through the night in preparation for this ugly creature whom I am ready to destroy. Coincidentally, my parent had traveled that faithful day the devil was to show up. I see it as an opportunity for me to crush him with no mercy. I waited from morning to evening and I saw no sign of him.  At about 7.p.m in the evening, I heard a knock on my door. It was Debby, our next door neighbour's daughter. Hello Jude, she had greeted,  Hello Debby, I replied.  I am aware your parents traveled and wouldn't be returning today, so my parents had advised that I c...

Adegoke Adeyanju, an APC lawmaker representing Yewa North 1 State Constituency, moved the motion for Oluomo's impeachment, seconded by another APC lawmaker, Ademola Adeniran. A GIFT OF FRIENDSHIP BEYOND RELIGIOUS BORDERS

Image
In 2012, during my university years, I received a precious gift – a Jalabia from Saudi Arabia, given to me by a new Muslim student Ahmed Anavami I accommodated in our Fellowship secretariat. It was heartening to witness the joy and surprise that a Christian student like me could extend hospitality to him within the Fellowship community. We shared moments of cooking and dining together, fostering a sense of unity. As he left for the next semester, he graciously gifted me with an original Jalabia, a gesture that resonates even 12 years later as the garment remains in use today. Over the years, I've experienced numerous acts of kindness from Muslim friends who treated me without any prejudice based on my religion. It leaves me contemplating why, in a world where God advocates love, some choose to foster division or hostility in the name of religion. May God bring healing to our world and enlighten us about the true essence of religion. Let our interactions be guided by love, transcend...

Cultural Imperialism Unveiled: The Transformative Influence of Christianity and Islam on Traditional African Cultures

Image
The idea of cultural imperialism started in the 1970s and was explained by Edward Said in his book "Culture and Imperialism" (1993) He talked about two main things: one country's culture taking over another, and how imperialism shows up in culture. Said said 'cultural imperialism' is like a strong culture using various ways to control and overpower a weaker culture. This includes everything from fancy culture to everyday traditions, personal to social things, what people believe in to what they like to buy, and even symbols and habits to copies of popular culture. It's the whole culture that makes people feel like they're part of an empire and think in an imperial way. Hence, Cultural imperialism refers to the domination or influence of one culture over another, often through the spread of cultural elements such as language, values, customs, and media. This can occur as a result of economic or political power dynamics, leading to the marginalization or ass...
