A Call for Dignity: Addressing the Dehumanizing End of a Mentally Ill Man in Benue State

Written by Umar Emmanuel Omeiza

The recent death of a mentally ill man has sparked concerns within the community, highlighting the need for compassion and proper handling in such circumstances. Despite efforts from neighbors and community members to ensure a dignified farewell, the response from BENSESA, the responsible agency, has been disheartening.

Upon learning of the man's passing, community members swiftly took action, alerting the local authorities and securing a court order for BENSESA to remove the body. However, the process has been stalled as BENSESA officials allegedly requested payment for fuel before proceeding.

The sight of the deceased man, who had been a familiar presence in the neighborhood for years, lying neglected has deeply affected the children in the area and poses a potential health risk to the community.

This neglect not only disregards the dignity of the deceased but also fails to address the emotional and health concerns of the community. Urgent intervention is needed from the authorities and BENSESA to ensure the man receives the dignified rest he deserves after enduring a difficult life.

It is imperative for BENSESA to fulfill its responsibility and carry out this act of mercy for the departed individual, as advocated by Peter Itodo.
