World Hypertension Day: Kogi State Drugs and Medical Supply Agency Sensitizes Staff, Conducts Free Medical Outreach
Every year, for over a decade, World Hypertension Day has been commemorated on the 17th of May to promote public awareness of hypertension and to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control this silent killer.
The Kogi State Drugs and Medical Supply Management Agency (KSDMSMA), under the pragmatic leadership of its Executive Secretary, Pharmacist Salamat Ize, marks World Hypertension Day by organizing a free medical outreach for its staff members and sensitizing them on the causes and management of hypertension.
Staff of KSDMSMAPharmacist Salamat in her speech called on the people of Kogi State and Nigeria as a whole to take their health very seriously and ensure they maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid hypertension.
"Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. Causes can include genetics, unhealthy lifestyle choices such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, stress, and certain medical conditions. Treatment typically involves lifestyle changes (such as diet and exercise), medication, and sometimes other therapies to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of complications such as heart disease and stroke. It's crucial to monitor and manage hypertension to maintain overall health."
The KSDMSMA boss further appreciated the government of Kogi State under the able leadership of Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo for making life meaningful for the people in Kogi through the provision of security, regular salary payments, and other social services that have drastically reduced the number of hypertensive patients in Kogi State.
She concluded by calling on everyone to join hands in making society a better place for all to live healthy lives.
Staff of KSDMSMAThe beneficiaries of the outreach, who are mostly staff of the agency and those in the neighborhood, appreciated the gesture and described the outreach as a step in the right direction. They prayed for the Executive Secretary, Pharm. Salamat, and the management team of the agency for continued strength and wisdom.
The outreach was further extended to the kitchen staff of the Kogi State Government House in Lokoja, where the blood pressure of those working in the kitchen was taken, and appropriate counsel was given. Those in need of controlled drugs were offered for free.
This year's World Hypertension Day is observed under the theme "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, and Live Longer," focusing on combating low awareness rates of hypertension worldwide, especially in low- to middle-income areas.
