Hon. Abanika Taiye: A Humble Reflection of Governor Ododo’s Servant Leadership

Sometimes I wonder how His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, managed to assemble a team of appointees who not only share his vision but also embody his principles of humility, dedication, forthrightness, and, above all, servant leadership.

One such exemplary figure is Hon. Abanika Taiye, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development in Kogi State. A man whose actions speak louder than his words, Hon. Abanika has redefined public service by shifting the narrative from the typical government job approach to one of personal responsibility and accountability. He treats every government assignment as a personal mission, ensuring that public funds are used transparently and effectively.

Recently, I had the privilege of accompanying a team from his ministry on an inspection tour of ongoing state projects. When we arrived at the Kogi State Polytechnic, Osara Campus, Hon. Abanika personally walked the several kilometers of perimeter fencing under construction. He did this despite the stress and potential security concerns posed by the isolated terrain. His words during the visit were simple yet powerful: “We must get value for the money being spent.”

This commitment is not a one-time event. Hon. Abanika is well known for conducting impromptu visits, even during weekends and public holidays, all in a bid to ensure that standards are never compromised.

What stands out most about Hon. Abanika is his humility. He interacts with everyone—regardless of age or status—with respect and sincerity. He once shared with me, “Sam, everything in life is about opportunity. We must not let our position get to our heads and forget where we came from.”

He is a man of deep empathy. I have heard several accounts of how he has personally stepped in to assist those in need, including paying WAEC and JAMB fees for students and supporting widows and orphans in Ajaokuta Local Government Area.

I deeply appreciate and celebrate leaders who are genuinely people-centered. Hon. Abanika Taiye exemplifies this ideal, and I commend Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for instilling these noble virtues in his appointees.

May God continue to bless Kogi State.
