Kogi Government Strengthens Drug Supply Chain to Advance Universal Health Coverage
The Kogi State Government has continued to demonstrate that its health sector engagements are driven by learning, innovation, and institutional strengthening as it intensifies reforms aimed at achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
This commitment came to the fore with the participation of the state, represented by the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Drugs and Medical Supplies Management Agency (KSDMSMA), Pharmacist Salamat Onize Ibrahim, at the launch of the Kaduna State Public Health Supply Chain Innovation Hub.
The strategic journey was facilitated by the State Government with a clear objective of understudying best practices that can be adapted to strengthen Kogi State drug supply management system.
The launch of the innovation hub brought together key actors in the health sector and supply chain ecosystem, including the Kaduna State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Umma K. Ahmed; Executive Secretaries of Drugs Management Agencies across states; the Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Resource Centre for Excellence in Supply Chain Management (ARC-ESM); The Deen of Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, health professionals; and senior government officials.
The journey was undertaken aimed at strengthen the Agency preparedness for such task for greater efficiency and impact in supply chain management.
The Commissioner for health Dr Adams Abdulazeez Adeiza applaud the Executive Secretary as he further explained the importance of such hub in the state looking at the location of the state boarding 10 states where the Pharmaceutical companies can confidently collaborate with the state government for continuous development of localized, context-specific solutions that address real community health needs which would help Kogi State and it's environ achieve faster, smarter, and more efficient product supply within a short time as the storage facility becomes nearer and this improve supply chain outcomes, particularly through improved lead time and better availability of essential medicines across public healthcare facilities.
As part of the commitment of the agency for making available safe, effective and quality drugs for the residence of Kogi State, Pharmacist Salamat also visited the AMA Pharmaceutical Plant for a site inspection to assess compliance with standard ethical and manufacturing practices. The visit aligns with the Ododo-led administration’s resolve to ensure that drugs and medical consumables procured by the state are sourced only from credible and duly approved pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Further reinforcing the state’s commitment to transparency and efficiency, the Executive Secretary also attended the International Industry Summit 2025 in Kaduna alongside the Director-General of the Kogi State Bureau of Public Procurement; the annual program graced by the Executive Governor of Kaduna State ably represented by the deputy Governor, the Emir of Zazzau and other prominent personalities across Nigeria.
The summit provided additional exposure to best practices in procurement processes and modern supply chain management, with a view to strengthening accountability and value-for-money in public health spending.
The Kogi State Government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the well-being of its citizens through sustained investments in healthcare reforms, transparent procurement processes, and strengthened drug supply chain systems aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services across the state.
