Kogi State Government Champions Health System Strengthening with Collaborative Efforts at the 5th Annual Breakfast Meeting in Lagos
In a significant stride towards enhancing the health system in Nigeria, the Kogi State Government participated in the 5th Annual Breakfast Meeting held in Lagos, organized by the Nigeria Health Commissioners' Forum, in collaboration with the Africa Resource Center for Excellence in Supply Chain Management (ARC-ESM), the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMG-MAN), and the Forum of Heads of Drug Management Agencies (DMA).
The meeting attracted esteemed participants, including health commissioners from various states, notably Kogi’s Coordinating Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, and the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Drugs Management Agency, Pharm. Salamat Onize Ibrahim, along with other key stakeholders in Nigeria's health and supply chain ecosystem.
The primary aim of the meeting was to align stakeholders on a shared vision and commit to actionable solutions for improving procurement processes. It was unanimously resolved to implement a Group Purchasing mechanism with local pharmaceutical manufacturers, marking a progressive step towards collective procurement.
The Kogi State delegation expressed strong appreciation for the meeting, viewing it as a bold initiative designed to enhance procurement efficiency, boost local pharmaceutical production, and expedite Nigeria's journey toward pharmaceutical self-sufficiency.
This collaborative initiative underscores the growing momentum in public-private partnerships focused on establishing sustainable systems that ensure access to affordable and quality-assured medicines. By pooling resources through collective purchasing, Drug Management Agencies can negotiate better prices, terms, and conditions with suppliers, leading to numerous advantages, including cost savings, increased bargaining power, and improved compliance.
Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza announced that Kogi State is ready to initiate pooled procurement by 2026. This initiative will provide a diverse range of pharmaceutical products and aims to eliminate stockouts within the state’s healthcare facilities.
Pharm. Salamat Onize Ibrahim commended both the state government and Dr. Adeiza for prioritizing a robust and effective supply chain system to enhance healthcare delivery in Kogi State.
