The Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, received an accreditation team from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to assess the hospital’s facilities and readiness for the commencement of Residency Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The accreditation team, led by Prof. Oluwole Ayodeji, comprised other distinguished members, including Prof. Odidika Umeora, Prof. Muhammed Bukar, and Prof. Francis E. Alu.
The team’s first point of call was the Kogi State Ministry of Health, where they were warmly received by the Honourable Coordinating Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adams Abdulazeez Adeiza, alongside heads of various health institutions in the state.
At a brief welcome ceremony held at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Oluseyi Bamidele Folagbade, welcomed the accreditation team and described the exercise as both timely and personally significant.
Dr. Folagbade explained that, having undergone specialist training outside Kogi State before becoming a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, he considered it a responsibility now as the Chief Medical Director of the hospital to contribute to building a sustainable postgraduate training system within the state.
According to him, the growing number of medical institutions and professionals in Kogi State makes it imperative for the state to begin preparing adequately for the training of specialist doctors locally.
He said the proposed residency programme would not only strengthen the hospital’s capacity but would also contribute significantly to the development of human resources for healthcare in Kogi State and Nigeria at large.
The CMD expressed appreciation to the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for providing the necessary resources and demonstrating the political will to transform the state’s health sector.
Dr. Folagbade stressed that the various developments and improvements being witnessed at the hospital were being pursued in line with the Governor’s vision and mandate for improved healthcare delivery in the state.
Responding, the team leader, Prof. Oluwole Ayodeji, commended the management of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital for taking the initiative to pursue accreditation for residency training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
He described the move as a step in the right direction and also commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for prioritising the health sector and supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening medical training and healthcare delivery.
Prof. Ayodeji assured the hospital management that the accreditation team would conduct a thorough and objective assessment, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that medical personnel receive quality and standardised specialist training.
Following the welcome ceremony, the accreditation team held a closed-door engagement with medical officers and relevant personnel at the hospital, after which they proceeded with a comprehensive inspection of the hospital’s facilities, infrastructure, equipment and other requirements relevant to residency training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The exercise is expected to provide an important assessment of the hospital’s preparedness and further position the Kogi State Specialist Hospital as a centre capable of contributing to the training of future specialists and strengthening healthcare delivery in the state.
