The Kogi State House of Assembly Committee on Health, led by its Chairman, Hon. Ochidi Usman Shehu, on Thursday, April 24, 2025, carried out an oversight visit to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja. The visit was part of its statutory function to assess and support the performance of health institutions in the state.

The delegation was warmly received by the Acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Oluseyi Bamidele Folagbade, alongside members of the hospital’s top management team.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Folagbade expressed appreciation to the lawmakers for their unwavering collaboration with the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, in ensuring that healthcare delivery remains a top priority. He acknowledged the foundation laid by the immediate past administration of Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello, which transformed the hospital into a modern, state-of-the-art medical facility, and commended the current administration for consolidating these gains by providing essential equipment, personnel support, and enabling policies.

Highlighting the hospital’s progress, Dr. Folagbade disclosed that over 13,000 individuals are currently enrolled under the various health insurance scheme across both the formal and informal sectors. He also addressed the challenges posed by the "Japa" syndrome (the emigration of medical professionals) and noted that the hospital, with robust support from the state government, has taken proactive steps to retain personnel and maintain quality service delivery.

The Acting CMD further expressed confidence in the continued support of the legislature and executive arms of government to improve welfare packages for medical personnel as a strategy for motivation and retention. He reiterated the hospital management’s loyalty and commitment to the vision of the state government in providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to all citizens.

In his response, Hon. Ochidi Usman Shehu commended the hospital’s management for maintaining high operational standards and congratulated Dr. Folagbade on his appointment. He emphasized that the committee’s oversight visit was not a witch-hunt but a statutory responsibility aimed at ensuring government institutions function optimally and identifying areas where the Assembly can provide legislative backing and support.

Other members of the committee, including the Vice Chairperson and Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Comfort Ojoma Nwuchioba, as well as Hon. Otokiti Zakariya Alhasan and Hon. Asema, also lauded the efforts of the Acting CMD. They urged him to continue initiating forward-looking policies that would not only strengthen the hospital’s administrative framework but also enhance staff welfare and overall service delivery.
